Today is the first Friday in June, so it’s time to participate in First Line Friday! This edition is extra fun because the book I’m highlighting is a new release I’m excited about: book 3 in Lauren Salisbury’s Legacy Chronicles series. Because my summer classes also started this week, I haven’t started reading this book yet, but I hope to soon! It’s going to be high on my Summer TBR list, at least.
Read on for the first line and other fun new release content! When you reach the end of this post, you can check out both the blog tour celebrating Discernment‘s release and the linkup at Hoarding Books for more bookish conversations.
First Line Friday is a weekly linkup hosted at Hoarding Books. To participate, share the first line of a book of your choice, add the link to the linkup on the host’s page, and check out what others are reading and sharing!

Today’s First Line:
Mahsan’s arrow was running on fumes by the time he reached the space dock.

About the Book

Title: Discernment (The Legacy Chronicles #3)
Author: Lauren Salisbury
Genre: Science Fiction, Biblical Retelling
Published: June 2, 2021
Synopsis: A misfit, a fugitive, and a sacred destiny. Everything changes when all three collide.
In Jiya’s world, the only choice a woman has is who she will marry. When she meets a mysterious off-worlder, she must decide how far she is willing to push the boundaries of Teraburan culture to gain her freedom, and whether that is truly what she wants.
Mahsan has never been accepted for who he is. The sole human raised on an Esarelian cruiser, his attempts to belong led only to disaster and him becoming a fugitive. When he is invited into the home of a Teraburan clan leader, he finds a place where he could finally put down roots. But his past haunts him, and he will need to make peace with it if he wants any kind of future in his new home.
Not everyone approves of Jiya and Mahsan’s friendship, and some will stop at nothing to keep them apart. As the unlikely pair discover their true calling, they will have to confront everything they thought they knew and learn to see themselves as they never have before.
My Reviews of Previous Legacy Chronicles Books: Courage (#1), Conviction (#1.5), Strength (#2)

About the Author
Lauren H. Salisbury is a lover of all things science fiction/fantasy, creative, and edible, but not always in that order. An English teacher for sixteen years, she now tutors part-time while trying to figure out how to use an MA in Education as an author. She lives in Yorkshire with her husband and a room full of books but likes to winter abroad, following the sunshine. Her favourite stories include faith, hope, and courage.

Since this post is also part of the release tour, we’ve got extra fun stuff today, too! The author is hosting an awesome giveaway, and each blog in the tour contains information to help you get more entries in the drawing. For this post, the info you’re looking for is Kalar. You can see the full blog tour schedule and other info on the author’s website.
Rafflecopter doesn’t seem to be playing nicely with WordPress today, so you’ll have to click the link below to enter the giveaway for the incredible swag pack (there’s seriously so much cool stuff in it!):

I think that’s it for today! This summer is already proving to be very busy for me, but I’m truly looking forward to everything (except maybe the fact that I will probably get less sleep and not have much or any time to read for fun). On top of my usual workload, I’m taking three classes toward my MLS, shadowing/helping our Children’s Librarian at Storytime in the Park once a week, and shadowing/assisting with another program twice a week. I’m so glad I have a job where I get to experience new aspects of the profession on a regular basis, and where I’m encouraged and supported in learning all I can from both formal and informal channels. Hopefully I will still manage to sneak in a few books over the summer besides my textbooks, but at this point that is not something I am going to stress over!
What books are you excited about today? If you’re into science fiction, I highly recommend this series. Each time I come back I’m drawn into the world completely and enjoy it very much.
Until the next chapter,
Jana

I am not a science fiction fan, but do love Biblical Fiction. I think my son would enjoy this series, I need to make a note of it for him! My first line is: “She’d Run Away. Rather than face him at the altar, she had taken her lady’s maid, ordered a carriage and run away.” It’s from All Arranged by Meredith Resce.
