Yarn Along // January 2021

I love Yarn Along days! I have a few little things to share this time. Mostly, I’ve made small things out of leftover yarn in an attempt to clean out my stash so that I can buy new yarn for my next projects (which I am currently planning and getting very excited about!).

Yarn Along is a monthly link up hosted at Small Things. The point is to share our yarn-type projects (such as knitting, crochet, or similar) as well as the books we are reading. I love watching others’ projects develop, and of course I love hearing about the books people are reading, too! You can see everyone’s linked posts and the guidelines at the host’s site, here.

Yarn Updates

Yarn Along January 2021

I’ve had a flurry of knitting and crocheting lately! I barely finished the carseat blanket I was working on in time for Christmas – but of course, I didn’t get it delivered in time. I’m just proud to have it completed! I had about half a skein of yarn left, so after a bit of experimenting I made up the pictured cozy cowl during a brief trip to Kansas over Christmas.

As the year wrapped up, I started trying to use up the rest of my odds and ends of yarn by making little coasters and (not pictured) mug cozies. I have an entire drawer bursting with mug cozies now! As for the coasters, I am trying to solidify my crochet knowledge and try out a few new stitches and techniques, so they are interesting and not held to a terribly high quality standard. They are fun to make up though, especially for just trying things out. Perhaps after I use up all of my scrap yarn, I will sew the squares together to make a scarf.

Reading Updates

The Common Rule: Habits of Purpose for an Age of DistractionI’m currently reading one very good nonfiction book and one very weird fiction book. I also still have a few ebooks in-progress on my Kindle, but I have not kept up with those as much as I should. The main two I’m currently reading are The Common Rule by Justin Whitmel Earley (it’s practical, and I am loving it) and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski. HoL was on my October TBR last year, but I did not get to it. I keep hearing people talk about it, so I decided it was time to tackle it – and it really is a beast to be tackled. I’m a few chapters in and, while the academic in me is loving the complex, multi-layer plot, taking notes about things that I think will be useful clues, looking up words or references that I don’t know, and reveling in the references that I do know, the lay reader in me is habitually bored with the whole thing. Also, we’ve already casually crossed so many moral lines that I can’t keep up, but I’m hoping it will all be significant later.

What projects are you starting this January, Readers?

For more yarn-y encouragement and to see what projects others are working on and what books they’re reading, head over to Small Things!

Until the next chapter,

  1. My biggest project is online learning with my granddaughter. I have her 4 days a week from 7:50 to 2:45 so my son can concentrate on his older son and the baby. That keeps me so busy. I am also continuing to clean out closets and cupboards to get rid of things that I no longer use or need.
