WWW Wednesday {9/18/2019}

Hey y’all! How is your week going? It’s fair season around here, and although I personally don’t plan on going to the state fair, I’m still inundated with reminders that it is happening. Call it what you want, there is just no way I am enticed by paying to go to such a crowded, chaotic, loud atmosphere, surrounded by the smell of sugary food and sweaty people, all in the name of showing off or having fun. The county fair and local horse shows are more to my liking. But that’s neither here nor there. Today is the middle Wednesday of September, so that means I am participating in WWW Wednesday!

What Am I Currently Reading?

I’ve got more books than usual for this section today, so I am not going to go into as much detail about each as sometimes.

📚 The Last Battle (Chronicles of Narnia #7) by C. S. Lewis | Children’s Fiction, Fantasy, Classic

I’m about 75% through and my heart is breaking. (Minor spoiler alert; highlight the following blank space to reveal): I did not realize that when the series ends, the country ends, too! (End Spoiler)

📚 Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman | Fantasy, Urban Fiction, Creepy

I have to admit that Gaiman is a wonderful storyteller, worldbuilder, and writer. The writing in Neverwhere is amazing. I just don’t like the story that Gaiman chooses to tell. Still, I have to know how it ends!

📚 Three Days Till Dawn (Antiquity’s Gate #1) by R. F. Hurteau | Science Fiction, YA

Compared to Neil Gaiman’s world building, Three Days Till Dawn is a bit lacking. It’s a bit predictable, and not really drawing me in. However, I’m only about 25% into this one, so maybe it will pick up.

📚 Confessions by Augustine of Hippo | Nonfiction, Christianity, Classic(?)

This book is huge and slow going, but I am enjoying it and getting a lot to think about.

📚 Any Good Thing by Joy Rancatore | Contemporary Fiction, Literary(?)

Again, I’m not being drawn into Any Good Thing much. The pacing is good, but it also seems fairly formulaic thus far, and I’m just not into it. We’ll see if it picks up.

📚 Hearing God’s Voice by Richard & Henry Blackaby | Nonfiction, Christianity – Prayer

I like to start my day with truth rather than fiction, so this is what I’m reading over breakfast at the moment. It’s not terribly exciting, but the theology is solid.

📚 Ready Player One by Ernest Cline | YA, Science Fiction, Dystopian, Fantasy(?),

Ready Player One has been on my to-read list for years, and I noticed about a week ago that the audiobook is available on OverDrive. I decided to download it and listen while I worked on things around the house. I didn’t get very far into it, and I haven’t listened to any more of it since the day I downloaded it, but what I did listen to was interesting. Hopefully I will get to it again on my next day off.

 

What Did I Recently Finish Reading?

Since my August wrap-up, I have finished six (6!) books. That is more than I sometimes read in an entire month!

📚 The Silver Chair (Chronicles of Narnia#4/6) by C. S. Lewis | Children’s Fiction, Fantasy, Classic

Finishing The Silver Chair leaves me with only one book to go to complete my goal of finishing a series I started long ago but never finished!

📚 Wedding Score by Amanda Tero | Contemporary, Christian Fiction

I will be sharing my review of this lovely story next month when it releases.

📚 Library Wars, vol 1 & vol 2 | Manga, Dystopian Fiction

This is a fun manga about militant librarians protecting books, freedom of information, and civilian privacy. Manga isn’t usually my cup of tea, but this series hits all the right notes for me!

📚 Between the Lines by Annette Lyon | Historical Romance

Beween the Lines is a sweet, clean love story. It is lighthearted and predictable, but still very enjoyable if you don’t mind the predictability.

📚 Dear Fahrenheit 451 by Annie Spence | Nonfiction, Librarianship and Books

I’ve got a full (though fairly short) review of Dear Fahrenheit 451 coming soon!

 

What Might I Read Next?

Can I just say everything? because really, the possibilities are nearly endless at the moment. I set some guides with my September TBR. I need to read a Christmas story in the next two weeks to keep up with my goal of reading at least one every quarter. As mentioned in my most recent Mailbox Monday post, I recently received four audiobooks which look promising, including a Christmas story, so maybe that is meant to be next? I am on the hold list at the library for a book called The Bakeshop at Pumpkin and Spice which sounds sweet (pun intended), but I am number three on the list so I’m not sure how much longer I will have to wait for it. Also, Scott Westerfeld just published the sequel to Imposters, titled Shatter City, and I would like to read it before too long. However, I’m not sure if it will work with what I need to fulfill the rest of my reading goals for this year, and keeping up with them is my main priority at the moment.
