Mailbox Monday {9/16/2019} Feat. Audiobooks + Cookbooks Galore

Hello again, dear Readers! This week started bright and hot here; I can hardly wait for the official start of fall next week. My weekend consisted of watching my nephew’s soccer game, vacuuming my car, and relaxing – all in all, it was very enjoyable!

Last Monday I participated in Mailbox Monday for the first time. I so enjoyed seeing everyone’s posts, and have decided to link up again this week!

Mailbox Monday is the gathering place for readers to share the books that came in their mailbox during the last week. Warning: Mailbox Monday can lead to envy, toppling TBR piles and humongous wish lists.

The books in my mailbox this week come mainly from two sources: my sister, who is cleaning out her bookshelves, and a giveaway I won. Surprisingly, I did not check out any new library books. I have several on reserve, but none have come in, and I managed to avoid the temptation to check out anything spontaneous. My Currently Reading list is too large to accommodate any spontaneous library checkouts at the moment!

Here’s what I received this week:

Received Via Giveaway

Distorted Glass: A Snow Queen Story by Sarah Holman

Genre: YA Contemporary, Short Story, Christmas, Retelling

Release Date: December 2015  Format: Audiobook

The Goodreads synopsis describes Distorted Glass as “A Christmas short story about faith, family, and unconditional love.” I’m considering saving this audiobook for December, when I will spend some time driving to see family. It isn’t very long, and might be a nice break from hearing the same few songs on the radio over and over!

Emmeline by Sarah Holman

Genre: Historical Fiction, Retelling

Release Date: February 2017  Format: Audiobook

My favorite Jane Austen story is a toss up between Northanger Abbey and Emma. For all her missteps, I adore Emma! I can’t wait to see how her story is handled in this retelling.

Quest for the Beast by Sarah Holman

Genre: YA Contemporary Mystery, Retelling  Release Date: December 2015  Format: Audiobook

Quest for the Beast just looks so fun! It’s also a short story, and since I finished the audiobook I had been listening to on my way to work on Friday, this should nicely fill the gap before I can check out another!

Waltz Into the Waves by Sarah Holman

Genre: Short Story Retelling

Release Date: January 2015  Format: Audiobook

The Goodreads synopsis, which I’ve linked with the title, is already pulling my heartstrings. I have to find out if she gets her happily ever after (although I am honestly very optimistic about the fact)!

The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James coverReceived From My Sister

The Portrait of a Lady by Henry James

Genre: Classic/Historical/Literary Fiction

Release Date: 1881  Format: Paperback

I honestly had no idea this book is so big? I read James’ The Beast in the Jungle and Daisy Miller as an undergrad, and if I remember correctly both were in an anthology, so I do not have a solid concept of how long they actually were. The volume my sister gave me is 613 pages before the endnotes. I definitely do not have room for this tome on my bookshelves at the moment, so it will have to float around my room for a while until I decide to actually read it and then decide where it belongs.

My sister also gave me an assortment of cookbooks, which I will not list individually. However, if I find any really good recipes in them, I will report back!

Total Books Received: ~10 (I haven’t actually counted how many cookbooks there are, tbh)

That’s all for my mailbox this week! I definitely lucked out in the sister department, not only because she gives me her old books, but that is certainly a plus! What new (to you) books have come your way recently? I’d love to hear about the books that are on your mind and in your hands in the comments. And, check out what others received this week by hopping over to the Mailbox Monday landing page!

Until the next chapter,

  1. I looked up The Portrait of a Lady on Goodreads and the first edition that came up was 700+ pages! I had no idea it was so long. That said, my GR friends gave it at least 4 stars. I hope you will enjoy it – not sure I have it in me. But I won’t say never 🙂

    1. I’m going to have to be very intentional about when I decide to read it, but it is good to hear that others have rated it so highly! I look forward to reading it, I’m just not quite eager enough to tackle it right away!

  2. What a great giveaway win – those audios sound delightful. The Portrait of a Lady is a classic but I have to admit that I avoid really long books. It’s hard enough to listen to long audios.
    Enjoy all of your reading/listening!
